Portsmouth Parking Garage Elevator Closes Today for Six-Week Makeover

    Oct. 21, 2013

PORTSMOUTH, NH – Starting today (Oct. 21) the elevator in the High Hanover Street Parking Garage will be out of operation as it undergoes repairs and improvements.  The work is expected to take six weeks, and garage patrons should plan their parking to provide the greatest convenience.  All garage stair towers will be open and available to the public.  Careno Construction has been hired to conduct the upgrade work.

To assist residents and visitors with physical disabilities, the parking division will operate a garage shuttle that will transport people from the upper and lower floors to the front entrance.  Hours for the shuttle will be 9 a.m. to midnight daily. Those who need assistance, and who have access to a cell phone, may phone the shuttle driver directly at (603) 817-9051.  Patrons with handicap placards will find 10 reserved handicap spaces on the main floor of the garage (2nd Floor) next to the entrance—five more than are normally available.  Six handicapped spaces are also available at street level on the lower floor next to the elevator and two near the Fleet St. entrance to the garage.

Elevator work will include a complete mechanical overhaul, upgrade of the emergency controls and interior of the cab, and installation of an ADA-compliant emergency phone in the elevator cab.
